Gavert Atelier’s Cody Kusakabe gives hair a tribal look for Spring
Reported by Maria
With fashion runways making less of a decisive impact on trends these days, artists look elsewhere for inspiration. Cody Kusakabe, Director of Styling at Gavert Atelier, derives his inspiration for millennial spring style in ancient folkloric cultures.
"I’m deeply inspired by the Edward S. Curtis-era portrait photos of the Native Americans," says Kusakabe. "I admire the contrast and combination of their hair textures as well as styles. It gives me the idea to create a straight-wavy combo, which is very chic. You pull your straight hair back as you would when making a bun or chignon, then let it go wavy outwards." According to Kusakabe, women with naturally-straight hair can achieve this effect by crimping or curling hair with difference-sized curlers or curling irons. Or, they can braid or twist wet hair, then apply heat, before releasing and gently finger-combing hair.
In terms of spring styling trends, Kusakabe believes that wavy, curly and textured hair will "make waves" again, and that women should leave behind the stick-straight, flat locks of last season. Rather than opt for short hair, Kusakabe advises clients to keep their hair long. "But if they refer the straight hair look, I think they should make their hair really spiky – almost like a wife!", Kusakabe explains.
"Spring is also a time to spend less time in front of a mirror, trying to achieve a perfected look," says Kusakabe. Instead of time-consuming updos, he likes the idea of natural-colored hairpieces, which have a visibly rougher texture than natural hair, and can be easily clipped on. He admires this deliberate contrast in textures, saying "Ancient indigenous people created complex visual statements with texturing and ornamenting their hair since they had few options for haircoloring. This way of seeing hair feels both modern and tribal at the same time."
