Nordstrom's 1998 Spring/Summer Beauty Trend Show

It was lights, cameras, action all the way, at Nordstrom's. Runways, and enormous pink screens were set up in the third floor Juniors department - where the hippest clothes would inspire the hippest new make up looks.

Nordstrom's divided the season's styles into four segments: Electrique, Angelique, Sophisticate, and Exotique. Each segment had its own make up look, fashionable outfit and fragrance, which embodied the essence of the theme.

Electrique

A Latin dancer and a little rumba music transported us into the first scene - Electrique, and Stila was the first line on the catwalk. Complete Coverage Foundation mixed with All Over Shimmer in #6 set the canvas for a playful Spring look. Pink Tango Rouge for Eyes and Cheeks was then applied with the #15 brush. Cyntiha lip color lined with Lip Contour Pencil #1 brightened the mouth, while Shimmer #6 was added to make a slightly shimmery pout. The effect - an undefined, soft edged glow that perfectly complemented the two-piece hot pink and gold- leaf knit dress.

The next scene in our Electrique theme, brought us Shiseido's take on Spring. Stick Foundation was applied, followed by Moon Glow Face Shine. D24 Plum Contrast was applied softly to the eyes, while L6 liner and Black/violet mascara defined the eye. Soft Pink blush was applied high on the cheekbones to create the perfect flush. Number 103 Electric lipstick was then applied to the lips with Plum liner used to frame the mouth.

Smash Box brought us the next look - a modern edge inspired by the perfect Versace ensemble. A sporty acid - green glossy jacket, white skinny pants with an opalescent stripe down the side of each leg, and a chrome yellow top, bring together the hottest elements of the season. Smash Box brought together the perfect look to complement and not compete with the outfit. Wet/Dry Foundation was applied first, with Smashing Rose Cream Shadow and Smashing Dusty Rose lavender eyeshadow. The eye was defined with Midnight Purple eye pencil and Smashing Black mascara. The cheeks were done in Smashing Amethyst, while lips were colored with Smashing Desiree lipstick and Smashing Rose lipliner. Sterling Gloss was dabbed on the lips for a polished mouth.

The fragrance for the Electrique look was Gucci Envy - a transparent floral fragrance with sparkling green freshness, and a natural sensuality.

Angelique

The freshest face of the season, this look is very feminine and soft. Sheer pastels for both eyes and lips.

Clinique brought us the first Angelique look. Super Balanced Foundation provided an even, soft complexion. Buff Lighting Touch base was applied to even out the coloring of the eyelids, then Angelfood was swept over that. Honey Bunch was added for contour and Blue Haven for accent. Chestnut Blusher was brushed on cheeks. Honeystick lipliner blended with Peachy lipstick was used for the perfect soft Spring mouth. The look was perfectly matched to the ultimate feminine suit - a soft candlelight pink, with a sheer floral top.

Next down the runway was Benefit's lineup. Matte Tint Foundation applied thinly, with Mr. Frosty pencil added to highlight. Shallow, Blushing Bride and First Kiss provided soft warmth and neutral contouring to the eyes. Cheeks were done in "Make Me Color Wash with Jackie Show Off. Lips were done in the perennial favorite, < em>Benetint, and Side Wipe Lipgloss. This neutral, yet stunning look was perfect for the navy slip dress - layered mesh tulle and chiffon applique exemplify the layered sheer look for Spring.

The Angelique fragrance was the Scandinavian jewel, Laila, by Geir Ness . Pure, clean and utterly feminine - inspired by the beauty and majesty of Norway.

Sophisticate

This classic look is always a favorite - always the essence of style.

Estee Lauder created the ideal face for this look. Lucidity Light Diffusing Foundation and Loose Powder make the perfect canvas. The eyes were done in Brown No. 1, Twilight and Chestnut eyeshadows, with Walnut Brown Automatic Pencil. Rose All Day Blush was applied lightly on cheeks and temples. Siren Red True Lipstick (Matte finish), was used with Deep Red Automatic Pencil, for the perfect red pout. This high definition make up completed the classic style of the Dana B. red mini trench coat, a sleeveless knit white and black shirt with tailored seasonless black slacks.

What make up could be better with a soft slouch Donna Karan pinstripe suit, than Chanel? This was truly a stunning look with flawless skin and defined features. Chanel Matte Makeup was used, with Candy Blush applied high on the cheekbones, for just the right amount of glow. Les Mats Naturals defined with Brandy and Black Double Effect Pencils made the eyes softly dramatic. Watermelon Lipliner and Jubilee Lip Color livened the complexion and created a beautiful Spring mouth.

What better fragrance to represent classic tailoring and style than Kiton Donna, from the designer famous for exquisite, hand crafted suits. A very modern, classic fragrance with soft floral notes with an Amber, Sandalwood and Vanilla base.

Exotique

A glowing skin warmed with the rich tones of an ancient treasure. Transform your look with any one of the rich spice tones for eyes, lips, and face. This look has been building in popularity for two seasons now, and shows no signs of fading.

A trip to Morocco may be out of reach, but your nearest Trish McEvoy counter can make you look as though you just got back from extended holiday. 1B Protective Shield, paired with Natural Tint Foundation give a natural sheer warmth to the complexion. Face Essentials Kit #28 define the eyes and cheeks. Charcoal rims the eyes, while spicy burgundy provides the contour and cream highlights the brow bone. The warmth of terracotta warms the cheeks. That rich warmth carries over to the lips with #20 Lipstick and #14 Lipliner. A bit of Highlight # 16 is added to the center of lips for just the right amount of mysterious shimmer. Pair this makeup look with the ultimate slinky knit dress, striped with spicy browns, tans and rusts - and a daring T- back.

For the more daring, try Urban Decay's new look. Eyes are the prominent feature, done in Laundromat, ABC Gum (clay), and Mildew (clear green). Lips aren't shy either with Smaze and Acid Rain lipsticks. Hair, of course, is livened up with UD40 Mildew and Acid Rain. This edgy, urban look is ideal for the Hindu - chic style sheer knit top, sheer pencil skirt, and a shiny turquoise leather jacket.

The fragrance that epitomizes these contrasting styles - Contradiction, by Calvin Klein. A joyful oriental, consisting of Orchid Flower, Antique Rose, with an intensely warm, spicy heart.

As if we weren't dazzled enough, the finale to the show brought us to out feet. The tall, slim model stepped out on the runway in a long silver sheath dress that had what looked like a several foot train behind her. As she brought her arms out from behind her we were astounded to see immense iridescent wings flow from her arms and hands. When she raised her arms higher, we could see the double shape of long, translucent butterfly wings. As she turned graceful slow circles, the crowd roared, enthralled.

Her look was the dramatic extension of Lancome's Chrysalide line - the metamorphosis of caterpillar to beautifully colored butterfly. Moire Creme Pommette blush was applied liberally to her cheekbones, nose, temples and chin. Her eyes were dramatically colored in Morphing Bleu duo #25 and defined with Definicils mascara in Black. Her lips were lined severely in Grappe Artliner with Bleu Rouge Idole lipstick, and Brilliant Chrysalide. Noir nail polish with Morphing Bleu, graced her long fingernails. The fragrance was, of course, Lancome's Chrysalide.

This was a truly exciting event, well worth getting up at 6:30 in the morning. You can

bet I'm already making inquiries regarding the Nordstrom' s Fall Beauty Trends Show!

Yves Saint Laurent's In Love Again - Summer 1998

Yves St. Laurent's "In Love Again" celebration continues with a summer collection that's pure magic!

A Passion for Pearls

Born of sand and seashell, pearls have become a symbol of femininity, a promise of seduction. Precious and rare, they are magical in their simplicity. The unrivalled beauty of pearls has inspired a summer collection of make up.

"Pearls are capricious, explains Terry, YSL's Creative Make-up Director, "they hover between opacity and transparency, their color is captivating, bewitching and elusive. They inspire desire." No one can resist their colorful harmony ever-changing with the light. Deceiving glints in perpetual motion.

Yves Saint Laurent has captured all the fascination of pearls in a swirling concentration of shades and textures overlapping in endless layers, like the inside of a shell. Fine and luminous, they soften the contours and enhance the complexion with myriad effects.

New Lipliner Pencils

The Colors:

No. 10 - True Red

No. 11 - Plum (exotic plum between brown and purple)

No. 12 - Coffee (deep brown with ne red or black)

No. 13 - Toffee (a beige nude)

The Formula:

A precise combination of vegetable waxes (carnuba and sumac) and oils derived from the coconut and palm, enable the lip liner to glide on smoothly while ensuring optimum adherence and hold.

Terry's Tips:

Turn Up the Volume - create a look of plump lips by drawing vertical streaks that imitate natural lines and then cover with Perles Couleurs/Lip Gloss No.4 - Pearly Brown.

A Hint of Transparent Matt - apply the liner to the center of lips. Using your fingertips, work the color outward toward the corners. Smooth a trace of YSL Firming Eye and Lip Creme to soften the lips.

A Frame of Color - for a contrasting effect, clearly trace the contours with a darker color than blend with a lip brush. Finally, place a very bright, clear color in the center of the lips in the shape of a pearl.

New Lip Glosses

The Colors:

Perles Couleurs No1 - Sunlit Pearl (glistening sun-light on a pristine beach).

Perles Couleurs No2 - Pacific Pink (pink with sea colored reflections).

Perles Couleurs No3 - Serene Mauve (tranquil mauve with a spark of lightning).

Perles Couleurs No4 - Pearly Brown (swirls of copper in a sea of brown).

Each gloss has coordinating Pure Colour Lacquer nail colors.

The Formula:

Mother of Pearl crushed and diluted in a creamy base, which can be applied in both transparent and opaque layers. The use of carefully selected waxes and esters brings a very special shine to the texture of these glosses. The lacquer effect comes from a high viscosity synthetic polymer, which forms a brilliant film on the lips. Its brilliant effect is enhanced by pearl pigments that act like crystal prisms, dividing the white light into myriad rainbow colors.

For the perfect complexion this summer - Terry recommends the Touche Eclat Luminous Radiance light reflecting fluid concealer. Applied to all dark areas of the face, it imparts radiance and smoothness to the features.

Shiseido

A new fragrance and a new foundation grace Shiseido's counters this Summer. Both are ideal for the warm months ahead.

In the same category as Lancome's Cool Coverage, comes Shiseido's Liquid Compact. It has all the most desirable qualities of a liquid foundation, in solid form. And it has all the desirable qualities of solid foundation, in liquid form.

Shiseido's revolutionary Water - Lock technology redefines the concept of foundation itself. "Water - Lock Technology is a revolutionary emulsification technique, made possible by the development of the new ingredient, Water Lock Complex.

This new complex forms a delicate network structure that encases water, oil, powder, and other effective ingredients, allowing them to coexist in solid form. At the touch of a sponge, this network structure is altered, releasing water molecules. The solidified foundation transforms into a liquid, providing the smooth application and fresh sensation of a liquid foundation.

The foundation also contains a Humectant Complex, which delivers luxurious moisture to the skin. Hydro-Botanical Complex refreshes the skin. And a Sebum Absorbing Powder provides unique elastic powder particles that offer a high level of sebum absorption, while allowing excess sebum to be removed, without removing your foundation. As a result, the foundation stays fresh all day long.

Also look for a new fragrance from Shiseido, called Vocalise. No description yet, but here's how Shiseido described it: "As freshness blows through an open window, aloofness turns to warm embrace and all that is extinguished, burns forever. Vocalise, a fragrance that speaks to your soul."
